Cessation of the 3G network
On 20 June 2024, IMDA issued an important notice regarding the cessation of the 3G network and equipment sales to all equipment manufacturers and suppliers. Here is a summary of the notice:
The Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) will progressively cease their 3G networks from 31 July 2024. An IMDA survey revealed that some VoLTE-capable handsets, especially those registered before 2020, may use 3G networks for emergency calls when dialling 999. With the 3G network decommissioned, these handsets will lose the ability to make emergency calls.
Action Required:
- Identify Affected Handsets: Suppliers and manufacturers must list handsets with this fallback mechanism in Annex A.
- Cease Sales: Stop selling these handsets and inform consumers via your website.
- Confirm Fallback Mechanism: Confirm with manufacturers whether pre-2020 registered handsets use the 3G fallback for emergency calls.
