Cessation of equipment registration and sales of 3g-only mobile terminals and non-volte capable mobile/smart phones

On 26 July 2023, Info-communications Media Development Authority (IMDA) of Singapore together with three local mobile networks operators, Singtel, StarHub, M1 announced the impending cessation of 3G networks by 31 July 2024.

This impending shutdown will have an impact on more than just mobile phone users. This is going to affect all mobile terminals that rely on 3G for connectivity such as tablets, laptops, mobile phones, Point-of-Sales terminals and machine-to-machine equipment, etc.

With effect from 01 November 2023, IMDA will stop accepting new registrations and renewals of 3G-only mobile terminals and non-Voice over LTE (VoLTE) capable mobile/ smart phones.

  1. With effect from 01 February 2024, all approved registrations of 3G-only mobile terminals and non-VoLTE capable mobile/smart phones shall be deregistered by IMDA. Accordingly, sales of such devices (including deregistered) for local use shall be forbidden.
  2. Import or sale of unregistered 3G-only mobile terminals and non-VoLTE capable mobile/ smart phones may be allowed for export purposes and/or use overseas by Telecommunication Dealer's Individual Licensees only.
