OFTA Accrediting Private Certification Bodies

24 Sep 2009     Hong Kong

Hong Kong's Office of the Telecommunications Authority (OFTA) has announced that it has begun to accredit private certification bodies to take over the responsibilities of testing and certifying telecommunications equipment. Some of the new certification bodies are situated locally in Hong Kong. Others will be foreign certification bodies. Private certification bodies will conduct the same activities as OFTA has up to now.

The impact of this development on foreign equipment manufacturers is that obtaining Hong Kong certification for their products will be even easier than before. In years past OFTA had already named a number of Recognized Testing Authority (RTA) laboratories from which it would accept test reports to its HKTA standards. The new private certification bodies will be able to conduct testing and issue certification.

As a practical matter, this will impact only selected categories of equipment. Most telecommunications equipment already falls under OFTA's Voluntary Certification Scheme (VCS), so approval is not mandatory for most equipment.
